As thousands packed the Oceanfront to enjoy the sand and water this Fourth of July, other people throughout Hampton Roads celebrated in their own original ways.

“Fourth of July represents independence for the entire country,” said Charles Burton, a tourist from the west side of Virginia.

While American flags filled the oceanfront, a big sign of patriotism was shown in the Deep Creek section of Chesapeake. The grass outside a home on Plummer Drive was mowed in varying lengths and painted as an American flag.

Charles Bryan, a 30-year Navy veteran, was one of dozens who stopped by to take pictures of the design Saturday.

“This day is the start of our freedom,” said Bryan. “I think the man went out of his way and definitely showed the love of his country and love of his children.”

Neighbors on Plummer Drive tell WAVY.com this is the second year the homeowners have decked out their grass for the Fourth of July holiday.

“It will go in my scrapbook in memories,” said Bryan.

Georgette Dausey was showing her patriotism in Norfolk. The kitchen manager at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4809 decorated her car in red, white and blue. She says it’s in support of all veterans, including her father and three brothers.

“We get to honor our veterans,” said Dausey. “Ones that have served, ones that are serving and it’s just our freedom. This is the land that we love, and because of our veterans, we are free.”
